The Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters of the Tourism Administration of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has commissioned the Taiwan Purple Crow Ecological Preservation Association to conduct ecological monitoring and site maintenance at Guanziling Hongye Park since 2011 to promote ecological tourism in the region and obtained environmental education facility certification in 2017. Besides being loved and participated by tourists, the Headquarters was also awarded the 2024 Environmental Education Facility Evaluation Excellence Award by the Ministry of Environment in November this year (2024).
The Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters has created a butterfly-friendly ecological environment in Hongye Park since 2009. The Headquarters annually holds the "Love Siraya - Dancing with Butterflies" planting activity in conjunction with local communities, business districts, international volunteers, and tourists. They plant honey plants and edible grasses that butterflies love to eat in Guanziling. This kind of ecological construction has increased the number of visiting butterfly species. From 2021 to 2024, three new unrecorded butterflies were discovered in the park (Hestina assimilis formosana, Curetis acuta formosana, and Arhopala birmana asakurae), bringing the number of butterfly species visible in the park to 119. It is a crucial area for the Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters to promote environmental education.
According to Chen-Neng Hsu, Director of the Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters, the recognition of the excellent evaluation this time results from the administration's many years of site ecological construction and environmental education activities. In addition, the Headquarters has cooperated with the local Tainan Municipal Baihe District Siancao Experimental Elementary School and the Taiwan Purple Crow Ecological Preservation Association to cultivate young junior tour guides and volunteer families. These qualified young junior tour guides serve as level-game controllers in the butterfly park activities organized by the Headquarters every year. By jointly promoting environmental education with schools, besides cultivating another group of new forces for ecological education, it can also allow environmental education to take root from an early age and create a natural environment for parents and children to learn together.
Chen-Neng Hsu said that receiving the excellent evaluation of environmental education venues and institutions is a recognition of the Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters' ecological education work. The Headquarters continues to optimize the park's hardware facilities to improve the facilities of environmental education venues. Besides enhancing the trail system in the park, the Headquarters invited painters to beautify public toilets with the theme of Hongye Park ecology so that the public can enjoy the beauty of nature's phytoncides and ecology in a safe tourist environment. Moreover, besides holding butterfly amusement park activities at Guanziling every summer vacation, the Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters also provides free environmental education courses, and the content is rich for elementary school students, adults, and parent-child groups to apply for online reservations. The theme of the course is ecology, including the Secrets of Butterflies, the experience of tagging and releasing purple crow butterflies, and the identification of russet sparrows—welcome schools and organizations to participate.
