A green, two-wheeled wave swept across Taiwan! The Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, joined hands with the Ministry of Sports to organize the 2026 World Bicycle Day series of events, centered on the theme "Healthy Taiwan, Low-Carbon Sustainability" and calling on cyclists across Taiwan to ride together. Among the highlights, Lingbo Cycling, hosted by the Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters, made a lively debut on June 3, drawing hundreds of cycling enthusiasts to Guantian.
This year, the event was paired with lead-rider training for the first time. In the morning, in addition to practical safety courses on group-riding hand signals, whistle cues, and other lead-riding techniques, the program broke away from conventional formats by showcasing the appeal of cycling tourism, from the three major international races, the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España, to the local Tour of Siraya 5 Reservoirs. It also incorporated today’s popular world of self-media video storytelling, with experts teaching participants how to quickly capture composition, color temperature, and depth of field during a journey using only a smartphone, helping them become "cycling influencer photographers" capable of creating cinematic travel images with their phones. The morning session also featured the director of the Guantian Jacana Ecological Education Park, winner of the international "Star Wetland Center Award" in 2025, who shared firsthand insights into the ecology of the Siraya area and the concept of sustainable tourism. In the afternoon, the World Bicycle Day Lingbo Cycling ride immediately got underway, giving participants the chance to put the professional lead-rider skills they had learned in the morning directly into practice within the group.
As the cycling group rode along the historic Chianan Irrigation Waterways Bikeway, an early-summer breeze accompanied riders past waterside greenery, irrigation channels, and lake-and-mountain scenery. The riders then took a spirited, impressive group photo in front of the imposing Wushantou Reservoir. Next, the group rode into the top highlight of the route: the Guantian Jacana Ecological Education Park. There, riders could not only rest and refuel, but also wander freely through the lush wetlands and explore the local ecosystem, experiencing firsthand the results of an ecological restoration effort recently recognized with an international award. This cycling journey combined healthy movement with a deep educational message of environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.
Hsu Chu-Lung, Director of Siraya National Scenic Area Headquarters, said that cycling has become part of everyday life for the public. It not only builds physical fitness and relieves stress, but also represents one of the best everyday ways to practice the global ideals of "green tourism" and "low-carbon travel." He expressed special thanks to all the cyclists who enthusiastically gathered on June 3, World Bicycle Day. This is the season when Golden Shower Tree blossoms shine in gold and Royal Poinciana blooms blaze scarlet; along the route, riders could take in the breathtaking sight of emerald water-chestnut paddies reflecting the blue sky and witness the graceful posture of the Lily Trotter jacana with their own eyes. Director Hsu also revealed that, following the successful conclusion of today’s event, the Wonderland Siraya - 5COOL Cycling series, running from July through November, will open an exciting new chapter. He warmly invited people across Taiwan to gather friends and family, saying that the organizers will lead everyone on an in-depth two-wheeled exploration of Siraya’s unique charm.
