Soaking in the Healthy Mud Springs of Guanzihling

Appreciating the beauty of the mountains and the old streets The original discovery of Guanzihling Hot Springs took place since the Japanese colonial period and its development has been carried on for a century to date. After soaking in the springs, the whole body feels relaxed. You are also recommended to experience hiking activities in the area. There are guides to lead groups of tourists on walks through the lush scenery, the knotted hills andmountains. The whole area and atmosphere is truly enchanting. The Hotel Guanzihling, has a history of over 100 years. There is also the temple of Central Acalanatha, the fearsome pedestrian trail of about 300 steps and a wooden stairway to Lingding oak Cherishing the past through the time tunnel There are two hot spring outcrops; one is around the Policeman Recreation Institution and the other under Huowangye Temple. Walk around the old streets in Guanzihling, experience the hot spring and observe the history which goes back over 100 years ago. The unique mud spring forms the most distinct feature of Guanzihling Hot Springs in Guanzihling Scenice Area. Because of the local geology, which consists of layers of mudstone, the escaping hot spring water contains mud-stone particles and various minerals and salts. They are of an alkaline carbonated type, and have a dense sulphuric content. The springs, which have a creamy feel, have temperatures between 75 and 80 degrees Celsius. As a result, the spring water appears black, which is why the springs here are termed the "Black Hot Springs." The spring waters are for bathing only, and not for drinking. The springs are effective for treating various medical ailments, such as skin allergies, exhaustion, gastrointestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis, and are known as "nature’s healthy springs."

Administration receives a global award for butterfly conservation efforts

On July 15, 2019, Siraya National Scenic Area Administration received the gold award in environmental education from the Pacific Asia Travel Association with a project on ecological purple crow butterfly valley construction and environmental education. The honor will keep the Administration going, in terms of promoting ecological tourism. Purple crow butterfly is an endemic sub-species in Taiwan. At the low-elevation Hongye Park which is 334 meters above the sea level in Siraya National Scenic Area, there are as many as 116 butterfly species including four kinds of butterflies - small brown crow, blue-banded king crow, double-branded crow, and striped blue crow. From July to November, the butterflies are many, numbering from 700 to 2,400. Unlike Maolin which is an overwintering butterfly valley, Siraya is an ecological one. Having worked with the Taiwan Purple Butterfly Ecological Conservation Association in the last 10 years, the Administration has planted trees according to the plantation of the butterfly’s original habitats, managed conservation in Siraya as a habitat on the butterfly’s migration paths, and held nectar-plant growing and environmental education events. Every summer, on weekends, conservation camps and “butterfly theme park” events are held in Hongye Park. Guided butterfly ecological tours, marking-and-setting free of butterflies, and ecological adventure games are all held to introduce butterfly conservation to the public, while developing local tourism. The Administration also trains local elementary school students to be ecological guides who help to explain the lives of purple crow butterflies and their living environs, as a part of civil science and ecological environmental education. Hongye Park in February 2018 acquired certification for environmental education and this has allowed the Administration to introduce purple crow butterflies to more groups and schools through its environmental education courses.

Siraya grows nectar plants for overwintering Purple Crow Butterfly

Purple Crow Butterfly is one of the only two kinds of overwintering butterflies in the world. When the northeastern monsoons blow, they go to mountain valleys in southern Taiwan where it is warm to spend the winter. When the spring arrives, they follow the footsteps of the spring, returning to places in the North to breed the next generation. They die when the temperature goes under 4 Celsius degrees. Since 2009, the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration has been working with conservation groups and schools to grow nectar plants for butterflies in Hongye Park of Guanziling through educational events, so as to make the park an ideal place for butterflies to stay. As a result, today, the park has become one of the most densely populated places of Purple Crow Butterfly, and as many as 116 other butterfly species can be found in the park. Now, every year at the turn of spring and summer, visitors can appreciate dancing butterflies all around the park. At a recent event, about 2,000 plants of “Kusukusu Eupatorium,” a kind of orchid, were grown to keep the park the home of Purple Crow Butterfly. This well responds to the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Tourism Bureau of MOTC’s key policy, “making Purple Crow Butterfly Taiwan’s tourism highlight.” The Administration looks forward to contributing more to the conservation of Purple Crow Butterfly.

Location: Lingding Park, Guanziling 3. Content: Ecological adventure games, butterfly-ecology chart explanations / guided tours 4. Online reservation is required. The seats are provided on a first come, first served basis 5. A tropical species, Purple Crow Butterfly prefers warm to hot weather. When the temperature drops to 4℃ or lower, it freezes to death. As northeastern monsoon winds blow, the purple crow butterflies around Taiwan move to the south to find a warm valley to spend the winter. When in the spring it becomes warm again, the butterflies go back to the north following the spring’s footsteps, looking for places to breed. To collect data of the butterfly’s migration, our volunteers write down numbers on the butterflies’ wings before setting them free in the wild. Now visitors have a chance to do this, too, and learn more about the species’ ecology.
