Traditional Japanese architecture and wagashi dessert perfectly combined at Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park

The Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park was inaugurated on May 5, 2011, featuring natural views and historic buildings. Popular among both locals and Japanese visitors, it is a platform for cultural and tourism exchange between Taiwan and Japan. To more effectively renew and reuse this heritage site, the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration invited Tsutacho Wagashi Studio to hold activities together through an open selection plan. On Sept. 18, 2018, a ceremony was held to mark the opening of the studio in the park. The nostalgic Toyo residence is such a perfect new home for wagashi. Wagashi originates from the Tang Dynasty in China. Today, it becomes an important legacy of Japan, just like kimono and way of tea. Wagashi-making skills were passed down a thousand years ago and they remain the same today. The dessert is alluring exactly because it is hand-made. Other than a few small tools such as bamboo chips, a wagashi artisan mostly uses his or her own hands to shape the dessert, bringing out its most unique qualities. The Akahori Residence in the Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park has a strong Japanese style. It is a perfect match for holding wagashi-making classes. What’s more, wagashi is 100% vegan, without butter, milk, and eggs. Making wagashi will not cause any smoke in the kitchen either. Thus, holding the classes shall not bring any harm to the house. The Administration cordially invites all visitors and residents of Tainan to join the classes, other than exploring the park. The wagashi, which looks like a work of art, will be served along with thick matcha tea. In this house full of old-time charm, the attendants can get away from work pressure and life’s boredom, finding peace of mind as breezes blow by, taking away fatigue and worries.

Siraya to hold international forum for sustainable tourism

The 2018 International Forum for Sustainable Tourism will soo be held on August 29 & 30, 2018 at the Conference Room of Yunshu Hall, Nanhua University by the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration, discussing sustainable tourism policy and purple crow butterfly conservation. In the last several decades, the world’s tourism has prospered as one of the fastest-growing industries. When more countries choose to boost economic momentum through tourism, natural environs and local cultures come affected. This issue must be addressed, and thus the Administration hopes that by holding this forum, it can call for the world’s governmental tourism units to care for their travel environs and economic, social and cultural developments, while enlarging their tourism and economy scales. Purple crow butterfly is one of the two wintering butterflies in the world. They migrate to the south in the winter, and return to their original habitats in the spring to breed. They may die when the temperature is less than 4 Celsius degrees. Purple crow butterflies normally live in all parts of Taiwan, but they move to warm southern valleys to spend their winter. When it gets warm again in the spring, they go back to the north, following the traces of the spring, and find suitable spots to breed and live. The Siraya National Scenic Area Administration, since 2009, has maintained an environment especially suitable for the butterflies. It works with conservation groups and local schools to grow plants which attract butterflies, such as “Kusukusu Eupatorium,” a nectar plant, in Hongye Park. At present, as many as 116 kinds of plants have been grown for butterflies. Sustainable tourism and milkweed butterfly are the themes of the forum. It is hoped that, through this international event attended by experts and scholars from all over the world, the ways to conserve purple crow butterfly and to carry out sustainable tourism may be exchanged. The Administration hopes to gather suggestions for developing sustainable tourism in Siraya, while increasing Taiwan’s global presence in this field. In line with the forum’s sustainable-tourism theme and to practice sustainable policy, the Administration has applied to join the Environmental Protection Administration’s low carbon emission scheme. Not only that all of the utensils used for lunch breaks are eco-friendly. The Administration will use as few posters and copies of research papers as possible, hopefully reducing the harm done to the environment. With thousand-kilo mango ice, Yujing hits new Guinness World Records

At 09:10 am, July 8, 2018, adjudicator Peter Yang of the Guinness World Records announced that “through people’s hard effort, this bowl of mango ice, weighing 1,554 kilos, broke the previous record of 1,226 kilos in Taipei three years ago.” The challenge was joined by 12 shaved ice experts and the owners of nine ice shops and three dried-fruit companies. Bags of ice, each weighing 20-30 kilos, were first poured into a 1 meter-tall gigantic container. Then, layers of shaved ice, syrup, and mango were added repeatedly. Finally, on the top, dried fruits and ice cream were placed. Eight people kept stirring the bowl of ice with shovels and spoons. At 8:50 am, the ice weighed 1,400 kilos. By 8:57, it weighed 1,500 kilos. When the adjudicator announced the final result, all of the staff members and a thousand participating members of the public cheered and applauded.
