Yoichi Hatta commemorates the campus Yoichi Hatta commemorates the campus

Inaugurated in 2011, Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park features the former residence of Hatta Yoichi, a Japanese technician who led the Jianan Irrigation Waterways and Wushantou Reservoir Construction Project during the Japanese Rule. Hatta has since then been hailed as the “Father of Jianan Irrigation Waterways,” and now people can commemorate this great man through the daily-life displays here at the park.

Hatta’s residence is a part of Wushantou Japanese Dormitory, which was completed in 1921, consisting of independent and duplex houses. The dormitory is one of the few remaining residencial sites of the Japanese Rule today.

It was in May 2009 that the Siraya National Scenic Area Administration restored the dormitory and decided to build the memorial park. The team went to Hatta’s hometown, Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture to study traditional Japanese building-construction methods. Artisans were later invited from Japan to refurbish Hatta Residence, Tanaka and Ichikawa Residence, Motoyuki Residence, and Abu Residence. The residences were finally decorated with old furniture generously donated by residents of Kanazawa. On May 8, 2011, the park was inaugurated.
