Guanziling Scenic Area Guanziling Scenic Area

The large Guanziling region is located between hills and a mountain range. Lush, green scenery is abundant everywhere. The Baishuei River, originating from the terraces, flows into the hot springs valley. The high temperatures of the hot springs are the result of geothermal activity, producing the unique hot springs resources of Guanziling.

Guanziling Hot Springs are one of Taiwan’s four major hot springs, the others being at Beitou, Yang Ming Shan and Sihchongsi. These springs are somewhat unique, being the only mud springs in Taiwan. They are of an alkaline carbonatite type, and have a dense sulphuric content. The springs, which have a creamy feel, have a temperature of about 75 degrees Celsius. The spring waters are for bathing only, and not for drinking. After soaking in the springs, the whole body feels relaxed. The springs are effective for treating various medical ailments, such as skin allergies, exhaustion, gastrointestinal problems, rheumatism and arthritis, and are known as "nature’s healthy springs".

The Water and Fire Cave is about one kilometer south of Biyun Temple. According to the laws of nature, the Water and Fire Cave should not exist. However, the geological structure of this area is unique, and between the precipices there is a natural gas emission. After being lit, the flame will never go out. Water springs also gush out of the crevices in the precipices, creating the Water and Fire Cave’s unique natural landscape of "fire within the water, and water within the fire".

A legend is associated with the Water and Fire Cave, which claims that long ago, the fire dragon and the water dragon had a disagreement, which resulted in a combat to see who would win. Both were defeated: The fire dragon became fire, and the water dragon became water, creating the unique Water and Fire Cave.
